Gokyo Lake and Everest Base Camp trekking, a great combination where you will have the opportunity visiting the best scenic areas of high Khumbu valley in the shadow of Mt. Everest and visiting lovely Sherpa farm villages within Yak grazing country.
A fantastic walks leading you to exciting places with daily views of giant peaks and into enchanting woodland of tall rhododendron-magnolia-pines and firs trees, in spring time it will be interesting to be when wild-flowers are in season with great contrast to green hills and white peaked mountains.
A great walk that starts from Lukla town after a short scenic flight from the capital Kathmandu, where our route leads past interesting farm villages decorated with prayer monuments and rows of prayer inscribed walls and bells.
Walk leads to high colorful Namche Bazaar with short hike for acclimatization a major village of Khumbu with all kinds of facilities that you can find in this large village where busy interesting Saturday market takes place.
From Namche heading into quiet trail to Gokyo valley and its serene lakes where trees and green vegetation disappears for complete wilderness of high mountains and beautiful glacial lakes.
At Gokyo with enjoyable time and hike to Gokyo-Ri and then our real adventure starts crossing high Cho-la pass, also spelled as Tsho-la facing marvelous views of Cholatse-Nirekha and Taboche peaks as walk climbs and descends to reach our next highlight at Everest Base Camp.
After a great traverse over Cho-la pass from Gokyo valley and its lake side reaching to our another exciting destination on the foot of world highest Mt. Everest at base camp shadowed by high peaks with massive Khumbu ice falls and glaciers.
Enjoying great thrill with climb to another scenic hill top at Kalapathar, the highest point of the adventure with closest views of Everest, Pumori with adjoining peaks and then our journey leads to Lukla for panoramic flight back at Kathmandu, after an overwhelming time and memories with an adventure around Gokyo Lake and Everest Base Camp Trekking.
We will welcome you at the international airport and guide you through the initial culture shock of Kathmandu’s narrow, winding streets to get you settled into your hotel.
In the afternoon (depending on your arrival time) we can take you on a bazaar walk exploring the secret alleys and courtyards of old Kathmandu that most visitors don’t get to experience.
We begin by walking into the old city and exploring the small alleyways, myriad of hidden temples belonging to both Hinduism and Buddhism (in some cases, both!) and make our way through local bazaars of fruit, vegetables, spices and stunning wares made of brass, bronze and copper. Not only exotic produce, but a fascinating mix of people are everywhere; along with the brightly clad locals of the Kathmandu Valley, you’re likely to see ‘Gurkhas’, Sherpa women in their striped aprons, traders from India, and sadhus – Hindu holy men – perhaps on pilgrimage to one of the many temples and shrines of the valley. (Note: this is a walking tour) Overnight in Kathmandu.
After the breakfast, your guided tour will start where you will be taken to most of the historical and spiritual attractions of Kathmandu. You will visit UNESCO World Heritage sites like Durbar Square, the famous ‘Monkey Temple’ (Swayambhunath), the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath’ and Buddhist shrine (Bouddhanath), which is also one of the largest stupas in the world. At noon, there will be a pre-trip discussion where you can ask any questions regarding your upcoming adventure. Overnight in Kathmandu.
All treks to Everest begin from Luka where you will be flying to, early in the morning. The flight will be an interesting one since you will be flying amidst the grand Himalayas. The short trek to Phakding begins immediately after you land at Lukla Airport. You will be at a Cheplung village from where you can have a glimpse of Mt. Khumbila. From Cheplung, you’ll continue descending to Phakding. Overnight in Phakding.
The trek begins on uphill and downhill trails with multiple crossings over Dudh Koshi River and a magnificent view of Mt. Thamserku from the Benkar village. You’ll cross more bridges and reach the entrance of Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo, where the trekking permits are checked. You’ll have to walk furthermore and pass through Jorsale village before reaching Namche Bazaar. From there, you’ll get beautiful views of the Himalayas including Everest, Lhotse, Tawache and others. In the afternoon (depending on your arrival time) we can take you on a bazaar walk exploring the secret alleys and courtyards of old Kathmandu that most visitors don’t get to experience.
This is the first of the three scheduled rest days which will help you acclimatize to the high altitude. You are going to spend the day enjoying small hikes in and around Namche Bazaar. You’ll hike up to Everest View Hotel to enjoy admirable views of the Himalayan peaks. On the way back to Namche you’ll also tour the Khumjung Monastery and Hillary School. You can also visit the Tourist Visitor Center. Overnight in Namche.
After strolling around the Namche area, you have to follow on the gradual trail with few short up and downs overlooking magnificent view of the great giant snow peaks at Shanasa. The trek ascend the left side to Mongla hill and will continue down to Phortse Thanga. Few hours walk of ascending will take you to Dole for overnight. Overnight in Dole.
After having breakfast, you have to climb to the scenic ridge above the Dole and the trail continues to climb along the side of the valley high above the river, crossing sandy spurs to reach Machhermo. Overnight in Machhermo.
Today, you’ll have to climb up to the ridge from where you can see excellent view down the valley to Khangtega and northern part to the Cho-Oyu (8,153m/26,741ft). The route descends to the river bank before climbing up to the terminal moraine of the Ngazumpa glacier. You have to follow the valley past a second lake, known as Longponga (4,690m). You will reache Gokyo village on the edge of third lake after an hour walk. Overnight in Gokyo village.
You will hike to Gokyo Ri, a small peak above Gokyo village, in the morning and savor the fantastic views of the entire Khumbu region. As you ascend, the views become even more fantastic and you can see four of the seven highest peaks of Nepal, Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse and Makalu. Reaching the fourth lake, Thonak Tsho , you can take pleasure in the lake’s serene beauty after which you’ll have to trek back along the retracing trail to the third lake. You can take an additional hike up to the fifth lake, Ngozumba Tsho if time permits and depending on your physical conditions. Overnight in Gokyo village.
If you did not climb the Gokyo Ri the previous day, you can do that today. Climbing to the top of Gokyo Ri is demanding as it is steep and takes about 3 to 4 hours to reach the top. You can observe scenery view of Gokyo village, on the edge of third lake overlooked by Cholatse and the broad Nogzumpa Glacier. You’ll be surrounded by panoramic mountains like Kusum Kanguru, Thamserku, Kangtega, Taboche, Cholatse, Makalu, Lhotse, Nuptse, Everest, Changtse, and Pumori. You’ll pass by Ngazumpa glacier to the mountain on the other side and along the edge of that mountain. You’ll reach Thagnak. It will be a short hike today with an afternoon of rest which will prepare you for long hiking days and elevation gain to come.
Overnight in Thaknak.
Since Cho La Pass is high pass, it will be a tough day. After crossing the Cho-la you’ll reach at Dzongla for overnight.
Overnight in Dzongla (4,830m/15,846ft).
You’ll have to continue the trek along the moraine of the glacier, with views of Kalapathar and Pumori. You can have an beautiful view of Mt. Nuptse. You’ll then hike to Kalapatther for the great sunset view over Himalaya after having your lunch. You can get good view of Pumori and Everest Base camp and glacier with scenic Mountain View. You can enjoy the night at Gorakshep the higher elevation. Overnight in Gorakshep.
After having breakfast at Gorekshep you’ll continue the trek towards the Everest Base Camp and to the Khumbu Ice-fall. You’ll pass through rocky dunes and moraine and streams with higher altitude till you reach the base camp. You’ll have to retrace the journey back to Gorekshep for the overnight after spending some time at the base camp. Overnight in Gorakshep.
Early morning the journey leads you to the top the famous viewpoint Kalapatthar, a small rocky peak on the southwest ridge of Mt. Pumori. You’ll get to view an amazing Everest from here along with Everest Base camp down below on the moraine of Khumbu glacier and lot of picturesque scenery. After enjoying the panoramic views stroll back to Gorakshep and trek down to the Imja valley at Dingboche. Overnight in Dingboche.
You’ll have to descend to Dudhkoshi river and pass through beautiful villages on the way. You’ll walk on a forest trail which will take you to a riverbed. Next, you have to ascend for around two more hours through pine and fir forests to reach a small village of Tengboche. You can tour the Tengboche Gumba and enjoy a panoramic view of the Himalayas, including Tawache, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Everest on the way. Overnight in Tengboche.
On the following day, you will pass through the scenic and peaceful valley endowed with rich biodiversity and culture. You’ll come across Sherpa settlements. You’ll see Kongde, Everest, Makalu, Pharchamo, Cho Oyu, Thamserku, Kangtega and Kusum Kang on the way. After arriving Monjo, you’ll have a night stay there. Overnight in Monjo village.
You have to descend steeply to Chauri Kharka. On the way you’ll pass Phakding and Cheplung villages. You’ll have a night stay at Lukla. Overnight in Lukla.
You’ll have a flight to Kathmandu in the morning. After reaching the capital city, you have the rest of the day off. You can take a rest in the hotel room or shop for souvenirs for your loved ones. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Reserve and spare day with optional sightseeing tour
Today is your last day in Kathmandu and is an opportunity to do all the bits and pieces you thought of doing over the past few weeks including any last-minute shopping, returning to places that you enjoyed or didn’t get a chance to visit before your trek. After a great breakfast at your hotel, you are free until it is time for us to transfer you to the airport in time for your flight home. We bid farewell for now and until next time!
