The Dhampus (Thapa) Peak summit and high-pass crossings are not guaranteed: Reaching the summit of Dhampus (Thapa) Peak or crossing the high passes depends on weather, snow and ice conditions, trail conditions, your health and fitness, acclimatization, and the professional assessment of our climbing team. Safety always comes first.
Be ready for early starts: Some trekking days, especially the French Pass crossing and Dhampus (Thapa) Peak summit day, may require an early morning or pre-dawn start. Please be prepared to wake up early, have breakfast, pack your day bag, and begin walking as scheduled.
Pack for both trekking and climbing: This journey takes you from green hills and traditional villages to glaciers, high passes, Hidden Valley, and cold high-altitude mountain terrain. Please pack carefully and avoid unnecessary items. A detailed packing list will be provided before your trip.
Adventure Travel: Every effort will be made to follow the itinerary as planned, but this is an adventure journey in a remote and high-altitude mountain region. Weather, trail and mountain conditions, transportation delays, local circumstances, and the health or pace of group members may sometimes require changes to the itinerary. Our team will always do its best to operate the trip safely and smoothly, but a flexible and easy-going attitude is an important part of the adventure.
1. How difficult is the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek & Dhampus (Thapa) Peak Climbing?
This is a challenging high-altitude adventure and is suitable for people with good physical fitness and previous trekking experience. The journey includes long walking days, steep and rocky trails, glaciers, high mountain passes, camping, and the climb of Dhampus (Thapa) Peak at 6,012 m. You should be comfortable walking for several hours each day and be prepared for changing mountain conditions.
2. Do I need previous climbing experience to climb Dhampus (Thapa) Peak?
Previous high-altitude trekking or basic mountaineering experience is helpful, but you do not necessarily need to be an experienced technical climber. You should have good fitness, confidence on mountain terrain, and a strong willingness to learn. Before the summit attempt, our climbing team will provide basic guidance and practice with essential climbing equipment.
3. What is the highest point of this trek?
The highest point of the adventure is Dhampus (Thapa) Peak at 6,012 m (19,724 ft). Along the way, you will also cross some of the region’s major high passes, including French Pass at 5,360 m and Dhampus Pass at 5,244 m. These high-altitude sections are an important part of the adventure and offer beautiful Himalayan views when the weather is clear.
4. What is the best season for this trek?
The best seasons for the Dhaulagiri Circuit and Dhampus (Thapa) Peak are Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November). During these periods, the weather is generally more suitable for trekking and climbing, with better mountain visibility and more stable conditions. The exact conditions can still change quickly at high altitude, so flexibility is important.
5. Can I do this trek during the monsoon season?
We generally do not recommend this adventure during the monsoon months of June–August. Heavy rainfall can make the lower trails muddy and slippery and may cause landslides or transportation delays. At higher elevations, snow and weather conditions can also make the passes and peak climb more difficult and less safe.
6. How many days does the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek & Dhampus Peak Climbing take?
The current itinerary is planned for 20 nights / 21 days, including your arrival and departure from Kathmandu. The program includes Kathmandu sightseeing, travel to the Dhaulagiri region, trekking, acclimatization days, high-pass crossings, the Dhampus (Thapa) Peak climb, a reserve day, and the return journey. The itinerary may be adjusted slightly when necessary because of weather, trail, or safety conditions.
7. What type of accommodation is available during the trek?
Accommodation depends on the part of the route. In areas where local facilities are available, we use Local Teahouse/Lodge accommodation. In the more remote sections of the Dhaulagiri Circuit, accommodation is mainly by camping. During camping sections, our team arranges tents, sleeping facilities, dining arrangements, and other necessary camp services.
8. What meals are provided during the trek?
During the trekking and camping sections, we provide Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner. Meals are prepared with consideration for the needs of trekkers at high altitude and may include local and simple international-style dishes depending on the location. During camping, our cook and kitchen team prepare the meals at the camp.
9. Is camping equipment provided during the trek?
Yes. The camping arrangements include the main equipment required for the trek, such as tents, sleeping mats, dining and kitchen tents, tables, chairs, and cooking equipment. Our camping team will set up and manage the camp while you concentrate on walking, enjoying the surroundings, and preparing for the next stage of the journey.
10. How is drinking water managed during the trek?
Safe drinking water is an important part of the trek, especially at high altitude. Water is collected from suitable local sources and treated or boiled as required. We recommend carrying a reusable water bottle or hydration system and drinking enough water throughout the day to stay properly hydrated.
11. How should I prepare for the high altitude?
Good preparation will make the journey more comfortable and enjoyable. Before coming to Nepal, regular walking, hiking, stair climbing, and cardiovascular exercise can help improve your fitness. During the trek, we follow a gradual pace with proper acclimatization days and rest when needed. It is also important to eat well, drink enough water, and listen to your guide’s advice.
12. What happens if I get altitude sickness?
Altitude sickness can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness level. Our guides will monitor your health and watch for possible symptoms throughout the trek. If you develop signs of altitude sickness, we will take the situation seriously and may recommend rest, additional acclimatization, or descending to a lower altitude. If necessary, emergency evacuation arrangements can also be made.
13. Is the Dhampus (Thapa) Peak climb technical?
The level of technical difficulty can change depending on the weather, snow, and mountain conditions. Some sections may require the use of crampons, ice axe, ropes, and other climbing equipment. Our experienced high-altitude climbing Sherpa will assess the conditions and provide the necessary guidance and support during the climb.
14. Do I need to bring my own climbing equipment?
You should bring your own personal trekking and climbing clothing, boots, gloves, warm layers, and other personal equipment. Some essential technical climbing equipment is arranged by E.B.C. Treks & Expedition. Before your departure, we will provide a detailed trekking and peak-climbing equipment checklist so you can prepare properly.
15. What happens if the weather is not suitable for crossing the passes or climbing the peak?
Mountain weather can change quickly, especially at high altitude. If the conditions are not safe for crossing a pass or attempting the summit, we will not take unnecessary risks. Our experienced guide and climbing team will make decisions based on weather, snow conditions, trail conditions, and the overall safety of the group. The reserve day may also be used when necessary.
16. Is travel insurance required for this trek?
Yes, comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended and should include high-altitude trekking and emergency helicopter evacuation coverage. Please check that your insurance covers the maximum altitude of this adventure and the activities involved in peak climbing. We recommend arranging suitable insurance before arriving in Nepal.
17. Can solo travelers join this trek?
Yes. Solo travelers and groups of any size can take part in this adventure. A private trip can be arranged according to your preferred travel dates. Solo travelers will have the support of our trekking and climbing team throughout the journey, just as larger groups do.
18. How much luggage can I take on the trek?
You will normally carry a small daypack containing items such as water, snacks, warm clothing, personal medicines, and other things you may need during the day. Your main luggage will be carried by porters or the support team. Before the trek, we will provide information about the recommended luggage weight and what you should pack for the high-altitude sections.
19. Is Wi-Fi and mobile phone service available during the trek?
Mobile phone and internet services are available in some villages and lower sections of the route, but connectivity becomes limited as you enter the more remote parts of the Dhaulagiri region. In some high-altitude and camping areas, there may be no phone or internet service at all. We recommend being prepared to enjoy a few days away from regular communication.
20. What happens if my flight or transportation is delayed?
Weather, road conditions, and other unexpected situations can sometimes cause delays in Nepal. We keep a reserve/contingency day in the itinerary to help manage possible weather, transportation, health, or other unforeseen problems. Our team will keep you informed and make the necessary arrangements while always giving priority to your safety.
21. Who can join the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek & Dhampus (Thapa) Peak Climbing?
This adventure is best suited for experienced trekkers, physically fit mountain lovers, and people who are looking for a more challenging Himalayan experience. Previous high-altitude trekking experience is strongly recommended because the journey includes remote trails, long walking days, camping, glaciers, high passes, and a 6,012 m peak climb. If you are physically prepared, mentally positive, and ready to follow the guidance of our trekking and climbing team, this can be a very rewarding adventure.
