Trip Notes

Domestic flights in Nepal’s mountainous regions, especially on the Kathmandu–Lukla–Kathmandu route, are highly dependent on weather and visibility conditions. Rapid changes in mountain weather can occasionally cause flight delays or schedule changes. In such situations, E.B.C. Treks & Expedition Pvt. Ltd. will make every effort to arrange the best available alternative transportation to help keep your travel plans on schedule. If necessary, road transportation or other available options will be arranged to minimize any disruption to your itinerary.

Kathmandu–Lukla–Kathmandu flights operate under different schedules depending on the season. During January, February, June, July, August, September, and December, flights generally operate directly between Kathmandu and Lukla. However, during the peak trekking seasons of March, April, May, October, and November, flights are often operated via Ramechhap (Manthali Airport) due to increased passenger demand, weather conditions, and air traffic congestion at Kathmandu Airport.

In this case, travelers first drive for approximately 5 hours from Kathmandu to Ramechhap (Manthali Airport), depending on road and traffic conditions, followed by a 20-minute flight to Lukla. If you wish to avoid the long drive to Ramechhap and prefer a direct Kathmandu–Lukla–Kathmandu flight, we strongly recommend booking your trek and flights at least three months in advance to maximize your chances of securing an early morning direct departure. Flights between Kathmandu and Lukla operate best during the early morning hours when weather conditions are generally most stable. Afternoon flights have a higher chance of delay or cancellation due to changing mountain weather conditions.

For travelers seeking maximum flexibility and comfort while avoiding potential flight delays and the 5-hour drive to Ramechhap during the peak trekking seasons, a direct helicopter transfer between Kathmandu and Lukla can be arranged, subject to weather conditions and availability. This premium option provides the fastest and most convenient way to travel to the Everest region. The estimated cost is approximately USD 600 per person, one way, based on five passengers sharing the helicopter. Private helicopter charter services are also available upon request.

FAQ

1. What is the Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lake Trek?

The Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lake Trek is one of Nepal’s most spectacular Himalayan adventures, combining two of the Everest region’s most iconic trekking destinations into one unforgettable journey. This carefully designed itinerary takes you to the legendary Everest Base Camp (5,364 m), the breathtaking viewpoint of Kala Patthar (5,550 m), the spectacular Cho La Pass (5,368 m), the beautiful Gokyo Lakes, and the panoramic summit of Gokyo Ri (5,357 m). Along the way, you’ll experience authentic Sherpa culture, ancient Buddhist monasteries, dramatic glaciers, and some of the world’s most magnificent mountain scenery.

2. Why choose this itinerary instead of the classic Everest Base Camp Trek

Unlike the traditional Everest Base Camp Trek, this itinerary offers a more complete Himalayan experience by combining the classic Everest Base Camp route with the stunning Gokyo Valley. Beginning with a scenic drive to Phaplu, the journey follows a quieter and more gradual approach into the Everest region, allowing better acclimatization while exploring traditional Sherpa villages. Crossing the magnificent Cho La Pass and visiting the emerald Gokyo Lakes provide additional adventure and spectacular mountain scenery that many trekkers consider the highlight of their Himalayan journey.

3. How difficult is the Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lake Trek?

This trek is graded as moderate to adventurous and is suitable for anyone with good physical fitness and a positive attitude. Although no technical climbing experience is required, trekkers should be prepared for several consecutive days of walking over varied terrain, including steep ascents, rocky trails, glacial moraines, and high-altitude mountain passes. Daily walking generally ranges from 5 to 8 hours, with carefully planned acclimatization days included to help your body adjust safely to higher elevations.

4. What is the highest altitude reached during the trek?

The highest point reached during this trek is Kala Patthar (5,550 meters / 18,208 feet), one of the finest viewpoints in the Himalayas. From its summit, you’ll enjoy unforgettable panoramic views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori, and many other snow-capped peaks. The trek also crosses the spectacular Cho La Pass (5,368 meters) and ascends Gokyo Ri (5,357 meters), making this one of Nepal’s most rewarding high-altitude trekking adventures.

5. When is the best time to do this trek?

The best seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the weather is generally stable, skies are clear, and mountain views are at their finest. Spring brings colorful rhododendron forests into bloom, while autumn offers crisp air, comfortable temperatures, and exceptional visibility. Winter trekking is also possible for experienced trekkers, although colder temperatures and snowfall should be expected.

6. Why does this trek begin with a drive to Phaplu?

Starting the trek from Phaplu offers several important advantages. It allows for a more gradual ascent into the Everest region, helping your body acclimatize naturally before reaching higher elevations. This approach also reduces dependence on Lukla flights at the beginning of the journey and introduces trekkers to the less-visited lower Solukhumbu region, where traditional Sherpa villages, peaceful monasteries, and beautiful rural landscapes provide a more authentic Himalayan experience.

7. How many hours will we walk each day?

Most trekking days involve approximately 5 to 8 hours of walking, depending on the day’s destination, trail conditions, weather, and your pace. Some days are shorter to allow for proper acclimatization, while summit days, such as Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar, Cho La Pass, and Gokyo Ri, require longer walking hours. Your guide will maintain a comfortable pace with regular breaks for rest, photography, and refreshments.

8. What type of accommodation is provided during the trek?

During your stay in Kathmandu, you’ll be accommodated in a comfortable tourist-standard hotel with modern facilities. Throughout the trek, accommodation is provided in the best available local teahouses or mountain lodges, offering clean twin-sharing rooms, warm dining halls, and genuine Sherpa hospitality. While facilities become simpler at higher elevations, they remain comfortable and perfectly suited for Himalayan trekking.

9. What meals are included during the trip?

The package includes daily breakfast in Kathmandu, while breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided throughout the trekking portion of the journey. Meals are freshly prepared at local teahouses and include a variety of Nepali, Tibetan, and international dishes. Seasonal fresh fruit, evening soup, and a selection of hot drinks are also included during the trek, ensuring you remain well nourished and energized each day.

10. What permits are required for this trek?

This trek requires two official permits: the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit. Both permits are included in your package, and our team will arrange all necessary paperwork before the trek begins. You simply need to provide a copy of your passport and passport-sized photographs before departure.

11. Is altitude sickness a concern on this trek?

As this trek reaches elevations above 5,500 meters, altitude sickness is a possibility for anyone, regardless of age or fitness level. However, your itinerary has been carefully designed with gradual altitude gain and dedicated acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche to help your body adjust safely. Our experienced Sherpa guides monitor each trekker closely, encourage a slow and steady pace, and provide guidance on hydration, nutrition, and recognizing the early symptoms of altitude sickness. Your safety and well-being remain our highest priorities throughout the journey.

12. Is travel insurance required?

Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for all trekkers and should include coverage for high-altitude trekking up to 6,000 meters, emergency helicopter evacuation, medical treatment, trip interruption, and personal belongings. While our team will coordinate emergency rescue services if required, all rescue and medical expenses must be covered by your travel insurance provider.

13. What type of physical fitness is required?

A good level of physical fitness is essential for this trek. Although technical climbing experience is not required, you should feel comfortable walking for several consecutive days on mountain trails while carrying a light daypack. Regular hiking, jogging, cycling, swimming, or other cardiovascular exercise before your trip will greatly enhance your trekking experience and help you enjoy the journey with confidence.

14. Who will guide the trek?

Your adventure will be led by an experienced, government-licensed, English-speaking Sherpa trekking guide with extensive knowledge of the Everest region. Friendly and reliable porters will carry your main trekking luggage, allowing you to walk comfortably with only your daily essentials. For larger groups, an assistant guide will also accompany the trek to provide additional support, safety, and personalized service throughout the journey.

15. How much luggage can I bring on the trek?

Each trekker is encouraged to pack only the essentials for the mountain journey. One porter is assigned to every two trekkers and carries a maximum combined weight of 20 kilograms (44 pounds), allowing 10 kilograms (22 pounds) per person. You will carry only a lightweight daypack containing personal items such as water, a camera, extra clothing, snacks, and any personal medication.

16. What happens if my Lukla flight is delayed or cancelled?

Flights to and from Lukla are highly dependent on weather and visibility conditions, and delays or cancellations occasionally occur due to changing mountain weather. Your itinerary includes a contingency / reserve day in Kathmandu to provide additional flexibility before your international departure. If unexpected delays occur, our team will closely monitor flight schedules and assist with the best available alternative arrangements whenever possible to minimize any disruption to your travel plans.

17. Can I upgrade to a helicopter transfer?

Yes. For travelers seeking greater flexibility, comfort, and convenience, shared or private helicopter transfers between Lukla and Kathmandu can be arranged, subject to weather conditions and aircraft availability. This premium option avoids the drive between Manthali and Kathmandu during peak trekking seasons while offering spectacular aerial views of the Everest region. Additional charges apply, and advance booking is recommended whenever possible.

18. Are Wi-Fi, charging facilities, and hot showers available?

Most teahouses along the Everest trekking route offer Wi-Fi, battery charging, and hot shower facilities. However, these services are generally available for an additional fee, especially at higher elevations where electricity is generated by solar power or small hydroelectric systems. Availability may occasionally be affected by weather conditions or local infrastructure, so trekkers should be prepared for limited connectivity in remote areas.

19. What equipment should I bring?

Proper equipment is essential for a safe and comfortable trekking experience. We recommend bringing sturdy trekking boots, warm layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, insulated gloves, a warm hat, sunglasses, a reusable water bottle, sunscreen, trekking poles, and a comfortable daypack. A detailed packing list will be provided before your departure, and most trekking equipment can also be rented or purchased in Kathmandu if required.

20. Is drinking water available during the trek?

Yes. Safe drinking water is available throughout the trek. Bottled water can be purchased at most villages, although we encourage the use of reusable water bottles to reduce plastic waste in the Himalayas. Boiled water is widely available at teahouses for a small additional charge, and many trekkers also choose to carry water purification tablets or portable water filters for added convenience.

21. How much personal spending money should I bring?

Although most major trip expenses are included in the package, we recommend budgeting approximately USD 15–20 per person per day (or the equivalent in Nepali Rupees) for personal expenses during the trek. This amount is generally sufficient for purchasing alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, snacks, bottled water, hot showers, Wi-Fi, battery charging, laundry services, and other personal items. It can also help cover lunch or dinner during your stay in Kathmandu if required. Please note that tips for your trekking guide and porters are not included in this estimate and should be budgeted separately. If you plan to purchase souvenirs, traditional Nepali handicrafts, gifts, or other local products, we recommend bringing additional funds according to your personal spending habits. We also strongly recommend exchanging enough money into Nepali Rupees (NPR) before leaving Kathmandu, as cash remains the most reliable and widely accepted payment method in the Everest region. Although a few lodges and shops may accept digital payments or foreign currency, these options are limited and cannot always be relied upon in remote mountain areas.
