The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek (North & South Base Camps Adventure) is one of Nepal’s most rewarding and least-crowded trekking experiences. This remarkable 24-day journey (including arrival and departure) takes you deep into the remote eastern Himalayas, where you’ll visit both Kanchenjunga North Base Camp (Pangpema – 5,143 m) and Kanchenjunga South Base Camp (Oktang – 4,730 m) beneath Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), the world’s third-highest mountain.
Unlike the popular Everest and Annapurna regions, Kanchenjunga offers peaceful trails, pristine mountain landscapes, rich biodiversity, and an authentic cultural experience. The name Kanchenjunga comes from the Tibetan word Kangchen Dzonga, meaning “The Five Treasures of the Great Snow,” symbolizing gold, silver, precious stones, grain, and sacred scriptures.
Your adventure begins with your arrival in Kathmandu, where you’ll be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. The following day, discover the cultural treasures of the Kathmandu Valley on a guided sightseeing tour of its UNESCO World Heritage Sites while making the final preparations for your trek.
A scenic flight then takes you to Bhadrapur in eastern Nepal, followed by a beautiful drive through tea gardens, rolling hills, traditional villages, and the bustling town of Taplejung before reaching Sukethum, the starting point of your trek.
The trail follows the Ghunsa Khola through lush forests of rhododendron, bamboo, oak, and pine, crossing suspension bridges, waterfalls, and deep river gorges before reaching the welcoming villages of Amjilosa, Gyabla, and Ghunsa. Along the way, you’ll experience the warm hospitality and unique traditions of the Limbu, Rai, Sherpa, and Tibetan communities while staying in traditional mountain teahouses.
After an important acclimatization day in Ghunsa, the journey continues through the spectacular alpine landscapes of Khambachen and Lhonak, leading to the unforgettable hike to Pangpema (5,143 m), the magnificent Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. Here, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Mt. Kanchenjunga, Jannu Himal, Wedge Peak, and the surrounding glaciers.
From North Base Camp, the trek returns to Ghunsa before crossing the beautiful high mountain passes of Sele La, Mirgin La, and Sinelapche La, where spectacular Himalayan panoramas unfold in every direction. The trail then descends into the peaceful Yalung Valley to Tseram and continues to Ramche before an unforgettable excursion to Oktang, the breathtaking viewpoint of Kanchenjunga South Base Camp, offering magnificent views of the mountain’s impressive south face and the Yalung Glacier.
The final days of the trek descend through beautiful forests and traditional villages, passing Tortong and Yamphudin, before a scenic drive to the tea gardens of Kanyam. From there, you’ll continue to Bhadrapur for your flight back to Kathmandu, where you’ll have time to relax, explore the city, or enjoy some last-minute shopping before your international departure.
Whether you are an experienced trekker or an adventurous traveller looking to explore one of Nepal’s last great wilderness areas, the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek offers an extraordinary combination of spectacular mountain scenery, authentic Himalayan culture, peaceful trails, and unforgettable adventure. It is a journey that rewards every step and leaves you with memories to cherish for a lifetime.

On a clear morning, you may be rewarded with magnificent views of Mt. Kanchenjunga rising above the distant horizon. Fortunately, the route branches off at the river crossing to Sukethum, leaving the road construction behind.
From Sukethum onward, the adventure truly begins. The road ends here, and from tomorrow you will follow peaceful mountain trails through the beautiful Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. Surrounded by pristine forests, rivers, and traditional mountain villages, your journey continues towards Ghunsa and eventually Pangpema (Kanchenjunga North Base Camp).

After days of travel to reach the starting point, today your trekking adventure finally begins.
Leaving Sukethum behind, cross the river and follow a beautiful trail through dense forest alongside the rushing river. Around midday, arrive at Solima, where you will stop for a well-earned lunch.
After lunch, cross another suspension bridge before beginning the main ascent to Amjilosa. The trail climbs steadily through peaceful forests on a series of switchbacks. Although the climb can feel challenging on your first trekking day, the beautiful mountain scenery and peaceful surroundings make every step worthwhile.
By late afternoon, arrive at the small hillside settlement of Amjilosa, where you can relax and enjoy your first evening in the heart of the Kanchenjunga region.
As you are still at a relatively moderate altitude, this may be a wonderful opportunity to try Tongba, a traditional warm millet drink that has been enjoyed by mountain communities in eastern Nepal for generations.

Accommodation: Best Available Local Lodge/Teahouse
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Today is a well-deserved acclimatization and rest day in the picturesque village of Ghunsa. This important stop allows your body to gradually adjust to the higher altitude, helping to reduce the risk of altitude sickness while preparing you for the days ahead. It is also a welcome opportunity to rest your legs after several days of trekking.
Take the day at your own pace. You may wish to do some laundry, enjoy a hot shower (if available), relax with a warm drink, or simply admire the peaceful mountain surroundings from your lodge.
Nestled in a steep valley, Ghunsa is surrounded by forested hillsides and snow-capped peaks. Due to its location, the morning sun reaches the village a little later, while the afternoon shade arrives early, creating a cool and peaceful mountain atmosphere.
Ghunsa is home to the local Sherpa community and offers an excellent opportunity to experience their culture and traditional way of life. In the past, many families had to send their children to larger towns to receive a quality education. Today, thanks to the generous support of HDFA (Australia), other charitable organizations, and the dedication of the local community, the village school has been greatly improved, allowing children to study close to home.
If you are feeling energetic, an optional afternoon walk is highly recommended. Cross the wooden bridges to visit the local Gompa (Buddhist monastery), where you can enjoy the peaceful surroundings and gain a deeper appreciation of the region’s rich spiritual and cultural traditions.
Return to your lodge for a relaxing evening and a good night’s rest before continuing your journey into the spectacular high alpine landscapes of the Kanchenjunga region.

This peaceful settlement is an ideal place to rest, continue acclimatizing to the higher elevation, and enjoy the spectacular Himalayan scenery before the journey continues towards Kanchenjunga North Base Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Today is another important acclimatization day, following the principle of “climb high, sleep low” to help your body adjust safely to the increasing altitude before continuing towards Kanchenjunga North Base Camp.
If you prefer a gentler walk, follow the Nupchu Khola Valley at a comfortable pace. This rewarding hike offers magnificent views of the impressive north face of Mt. Jannu (Kumbhakarna), one of the most beautiful and technically challenging mountains in the Himalayas. It is an excellent way to stay active while allowing your body to acclimatize.
For those feeling strong and well acclimatized, an optional hike to the Jannu Viewpoint is highly recommended. The climb is more demanding, but the reward is unforgettable. Standing beneath the towering north face of Mt. Jannu, you will enjoy one of the most spectacular mountain panoramas of the entire trek.
If your itinerary allows, spending an additional day in Khambachen is well worthwhile. The peaceful surroundings, stunning alpine scenery, and excellent acclimatization opportunities make this one of the highlights of the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek.

Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), the world’s third-highest mountain, together with its massive glaciers and a magnificent amphitheatre of snow-covered Himalayan peaks.
The trail follows a gradual ascent across rocky alpine terrain and glacial moraines. Although the climb is not technically difficult, the high altitude makes the walk more demanding. As you gain elevation, the landscape becomes increasingly wild and dramatic, creating an unforgettable sense of remoteness in the heart of the Himalayas.
After reaching Pangpema, take time to admire the spectacular scenery, capture memorable photographs, and celebrate this remarkable achievement before beginning the return trek to Lhonak.

As you descend, the barren high-altitude terrain gradually gives way to greener hillsides, with forests of pine, fir, and rhododendron once again lining the trail. The familiar sounds of birdsong and flowing rivers return, creating a peaceful atmosphere after the silence of the high Himalayas.
By late afternoon, arrive back in the welcoming Sherpa village of Ghunsa. The lower altitude, comfortable surroundings, and warm hospitality make it an ideal place to relax, reflect on your journey to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, and prepare for the next stage of your adventure.

After breakfast, leave Ghunsa behind and begin the climb towards Sele La High Camp. Today’s trek is shorter, allowing for a more relaxed start before ascending through beautiful forests of pine, fir, and rhododendron.
The trail climbs steadily through the forest before reaching a peaceful clearing and open meadow, where you can enjoy a short rest surrounded by nature. Although today’s altitude is still moderate, some shaded sections of the trail can be icy during colder months, so careful footing is recommended.
As you reach the ridge, take a well-earned break and enjoy impressive views over the valley below. Looking back, you can see parts of the trail you followed during your journey to Ghunsa, offering a wonderful reminder of how far you have travelled.
Beyond the ridge, the path becomes more gradual, crossing open hillsides with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and the rolling middle hills in the distance. Walk alongside pilgrims performing kora (circumambulation), spin prayer wheels, and experience the peaceful atmosphere created by chanting monks, fragrant incense, and colorful prayer flags.
After your cultural tour, return to your hotel and enjoy some free time to relax, explore the surrounding area, or organize your trekking equipment in preparation for the adventure ahead.
In the evening, we will gather for a final pre-trek briefing to review the journey, reconfirm important logistics, and ensure that all equipment and preparations are complete. This is also an ideal opportunity to ask any remaining questions before your trek begins.
Enjoy a good night’s rest — tomorrow, your remarkable journey into the Kanchenjunga region begins.

After an early breakfast, transfer to the domestic terminal of Kathmandu Airport for a scenic flight to Bhadrapur in southeastern Nepal. On a clear day, enjoy spectacular views of the Himalayan range and the diverse landscapes below.
Upon arrival in Bhadrapur, meet your driver and begin the approximately 240 km drive to Phidim. The 6–7-hour journey follows winding mountain roads through lush green hills, terraced farmland, traditional villages, and beautiful rural landscapes, offering an enjoyable introduction to eastern Nepal.
After reaching Phidim, check in to your standard hotel and spend the rest of the evening relaxing after today’s journey. Take time to refresh and prepare for the exciting trekking adventure that begins tomorrow.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After breakfast, continue your scenic drive from Phidim to Sukethum. Today’s journey also serves as a contingency day, providing flexibility in case of any flight or travel delays on the previous day.
On a clear morning, you may be rewarded with magnificent views of Mt. Kanchenjunga rising above the distant horizon. The route passes through Taplejung, a charming hill town where you can take a short break to explore the local market and experience the daily life and culture of the local community.
Before 2020, this section was part of the traditional trekking route. Today, road construction has extended much farther into the valley as part of the developing highway towards the Tibet border.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After days of travel to reach the starting point, today your trekking adventure finally begins.
Leaving Sukethum behind, cross the river and follow a beautiful trail through dense forest alongside the rushing river. Along the way, cross several suspension bridges as the path winds through a spectacular narrow gorge surrounded by lush vegetation. Around midday, arrive at Solima, where you will stop for a well-earned lunch.
After lunch, cross another suspension bridge before beginning the main ascent to Amjilosa. The trail climbs steadily through peaceful forests on a series of switchbacks. During spring, the hillsides are decorated with colorful rhododendron blossoms, Nepal’s national flower.

After breakfast, begin today’s trek with a gradual ascent above Amjilosa, following a scenic trail through beautiful forests of bamboo, oak, and rhododendron. The peaceful surroundings and fresh mountain air make for an enjoyable start to the day.
The trail then descends towards the Ghunsa Khola (river), passing cascading waterfalls, open pasturelands, and several small streams. As the journey continues, the path gently climbs and descends through the forest, becoming slightly more challenging while offering impressive views of the river flowing through the deep valley below.
By afternoon, arrive at the picturesque Sherpa village of Gyabla, a peaceful settlement surrounded by forests and mountains. The village is home to an old Buddhist monastery and several ancient chortens, reflecting the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of the region.
After checking into your lodge, you will have time to relax or take a leisurely walk around the village and experience the warm hospitality and traditional lifestyle of the local Sherpa community.

After breakfast, leave the peaceful village of Gyabla and continue your trek towards Ghunsa, one of the largest and most important villages in the Kanchenjunga region. The trail follows the Ghunsa Khola through beautiful forests of rhododendron, pine, and fir, with occasional views of waterfalls, rocky cliffs, and the surrounding mountains.
As you gain altitude, the landscape gradually changes, and the influence of Sherpa culture becomes more noticeable. Pass colorful prayer flags, mani walls, and traditional stone houses before arriving in the picturesque village of Ghunsa.
Nestled in a broad valley, Ghunsa is a welcoming Sherpa settlement known for its rich Buddhist heritage and warm mountain hospitality. After checking into your lodge, you may take a leisurely walk through the village, visit the beautiful local monastery, or simply relax while enjoying the peaceful surroundings and magnificent Himalayan scenery.
Ghunsa is also an important acclimatization stop for trekkers and climbers heading towards Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, making it an ideal place to rest before continuing higher into the mountains.

After breakfast, continue your ascent towards Khambachen, a peaceful Sherpa settlement set beneath the towering peaks of the Kanchenjunga region. The trail follows the Ghunsa Khola through spectacular alpine scenery, passing dramatic cliffs, glacial streams, and cascading waterfalls.
As you gain altitude, the dense forests gradually disappear, giving way to rocky landscapes, alpine meadows, and magnificent mountain views. This section of the trek offers excellent opportunities to spot Himalayan wildlife, including blue sheep and, with a little luck, the elusive Himalayan snow leopard in the surrounding mountains.
By afternoon, arrive at the beautiful village of Khambachen (4,050 m), surrounded by some of the highest peaks in eastern Nepal.

Return to your lodge for a relaxing evening and another restful night before your journey continues into the higher Himalayas.

This remote area is also home to blue sheep, Himalayan marmots, and other high-altitude wildlife, so keep your camera ready.
After approximately five hours of trekking, arrive at Lhonak (4,780 m), one of the highest overnight stops on the journey. Surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery and complete wilderness, this peaceful settlement provides an unforgettable Himalayan experience. Spend the remainder of the day resting, staying well hydrated, and preparing for tomorrow’s exciting excursion to Pangpema (Kanchenjunga North Base Camp).

Today is one of the most exciting and rewarding days of the entire trek as you hike to Pangpema, the spectacular Kanchenjunga North Base Camp.

The trail passes through Lhonak and Khambachen, where you will normally stop for lunch before continuing downhill. Along the way, enjoy another opportunity to admire the impressive mountain scenery, glacial rivers, and rugged alpine landscapes from a different perspective.

After a final gentle climb, Sele La High Camp comes into view, where a few simple mountain lodges provide a peaceful overnight stop.
Your lodge is operated by Dawa, a friendly local host and former expedition cook who is well known for preparing delicious meals despite the remote location. With a little luck, you may even spot signs of Himalayan wildlife, as snow leopards have occasionally been seen in this area.

Along the way, enjoy your first close views of the beautiful peaks of Rathong and Kabru. A small teahouse beside a peaceful alpine lake provides a perfect place to rest, enjoy a warm drink, and take in the stunning surroundings.

The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is located in the far eastern region of Nepal within the beautiful Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. The trail lies close to the borders of India (Sikkim) and Tibet, making it one of Nepal’s most remote and unspoiled trekking destinations. Unlike the busy Everest and Annapurna regions, Kanchenjunga offers peaceful trails, pristine nature, rich biodiversity, and authentic mountain culture. The trek visits both the North and South Base Camps of Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), the world’s third-highest mountain, providing an unforgettable Himalayan adventure.
The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is considered a challenging high-altitude trek. You will walk for approximately 5 to 8 hours on most trekking days, often on steep, rocky, and uneven mountain trails. The highest point of the trek is Pangpema (5,143 m), where the thinner air makes walking more demanding. While previous trekking experience is helpful, it is not essential. Anyone with good physical fitness, a positive attitude, and proper preparation can successfully complete this adventure. Our carefully designed itinerary includes acclimatization days to help your body adjust safely to the increasing altitude.
This itinerary is a 24-day adventure, including your arrival and departure in Kathmandu. It also includes a guided sightseeing tour of Kathmandu, scenic domestic flights, private ground transportation, a complete trek to both Kanchenjunga North and South Base Camps, and a reserve day for unexpected delays caused by weather or other unforeseen circumstances. The itinerary is designed at a comfortable pace to allow proper acclimatization, making the journey safer and more enjoyable.
The highest point of the trek is Pangpema (Kanchenjunga North Base Camp) at 5,143 m (16,873 ft). This spectacular viewpoint offers breathtaking panoramic views of Mt. Kanchenjunga, Jannu Himal, Wedge Peak, and the surrounding glaciers. Although the altitude is high, our itinerary includes two acclimatization days in Ghunsa and Khambachen to reduce the risk of altitude sickness and give your body time to adjust gradually.
Yes. This is a complete Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek, visiting both Kanchenjunga North Base Camp (Pangpema – 5,143 m) and Kanchenjunga South Base Camp (Oktang – 4,730 m). Very few trekking routes in Nepal offer the opportunity to experience both sides of this magnificent mountain. Each base camp has its own unique scenery, with the North Base Camp featuring dramatic glaciers and towering peaks, while the South Base Camp provides incredible views of Kanchenjunga’s impressive south face and the Yalung Glacier.
The best seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November). During these months, the weather is generally stable, skies are often clear, and mountain views are at their best. Spring brings colourful rhododendron forests and blooming alpine flowers, while autumn offers crisp air, excellent visibility, and pleasant trekking conditions. Winter is possible for experienced trekkers but can be extremely cold with heavy snowfall at higher elevations. The summer monsoon season is generally not recommended due to frequent rain, slippery trails, and limited mountain views.
Previous trekking experience is helpful but not compulsory. If you are in good health, physically active, and willing to prepare before your trip, you can successfully complete this trek. We recommend regular walking, hiking, cycling, swimming, or other cardiovascular exercise for several weeks before your arrival. Your experienced guide will walk at a comfortable pace, monitor your health throughout the journey, and help ensure a safe and enjoyable trekking experience.
Most trekking days involve approximately 5 to 8 hours of walking, depending on the distance, altitude, and trail conditions. Some days are shorter to allow for acclimatization, while others are longer when crossing mountain passes or visiting the base camps. There will be regular breaks for rest, photographs, tea, and lunch, allowing you to enjoy the scenery without feeling rushed. Your guide will adjust the pace to suit the group, making the journey comfortable, safe, and enjoyable for everyone.
During your stay in Kathmandu, you will be accommodated in a comfortable tourist-standard hotel on a twin-sharing basis with daily breakfast. Throughout the trek, you will stay in the best available local teahouses or lodges, offering a warm and authentic mountain experience. Rooms are generally simple but clean and comfortable, with twin beds, mattresses, pillows, and blankets. Bathroom facilities are shared in most places, while a few villages offer rooms with attached bathrooms. Although the facilities become more basic at higher elevations, the warm hospitality of the local people makes every overnight stay a memorable part of the adventure.
Breakfast is included during your stay in Kathmandu. Throughout the trek, three meals a day (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner) are provided. Meals are freshly prepared at the local teahouses and include a variety of Nepali, Tibetan, and international dishes. To help keep your energy levels high, one serving of soup is included with dinner each evening. Seasonal fresh fruit is also served after dinner whenever available, and you can enjoy hot drinks such as tea, coffee, hot lemon with honey and ginger, or hot chocolate, depending on lodge availability.
Yes. Safe drinking water is available throughout the trek. Most teahouses provide boiled or filtered drinking water for a small charge. We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle and using water purification tablets or a personal water filter to reduce plastic waste and help protect the mountain environment. Your guide will also advise you on the safest places to refill your water bottle each day.
The Kanchenjunga region is a protected and restricted trekking area. This trek requires two official permits: the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (KCAP) and the Kanchenjunga Restricted Area Permit (RAP). These permits are included in your trekking package and will be arranged by E.B.C. Treks & Expedition Pvt. Ltd. before your trek begins, so you do not need to arrange anything yourself.
Yes. A licensed trekking guide is mandatory because the Kanchenjunga region is a restricted area. Trekking independently is not permitted under current Nepal Government regulations. Your experienced guide not only ensures your safety but also assists with navigation, communication, local culture, altitude management, and any unexpected situations that may arise during the journey. Having a knowledgeable local guide greatly enhances the overall trekking experience.
Yes. Friendly, experienced, and reliable porters will carry your main trekking bag, allowing you to enjoy the trek with only a light daypack containing your daily essentials. We normally provide one porter for every two trekkers, with a maximum combined luggage weight of 20 kg. This means each trekker should pack no more than 10 kg in the duffel bag provided for the trek.
Yes. Because the trek reaches an altitude of over 5,100 m, there is a possibility of developing altitude sickness. Our itinerary has been carefully designed with gradual altitude gain and dedicated acclimatization days in Ghunsa and Khambachen to reduce this risk. Your guide will monitor your health throughout the trek using a portable pulse oximeter when necessary and will ensure the group follows a safe and comfortable pace. Drinking plenty of water, walking slowly, and informing your guide about any symptoms are essential for a safe trek.
Mobile phone coverage is available in some villages but becomes limited or unavailable in remote sections of the trek. A few teahouses offer Wi-Fi or internet access for an additional charge, although the connection is often slow and depends on the weather and location. We recommend informing your family and friends before your trek that communication may be limited for several days while exploring the more remote parts of the Kanchenjunga region.
Yes. Most teahouses offer battery charging facilities for mobile phones, cameras, and other small electronic devices. Charging is usually available for an additional fee and is often powered by solar energy or small hydroelectric systems. As electricity can be limited in remote villages, we recommend bringing a power bank to keep your devices charged throughout the trek.
Hot showers are available in many of the lower and mid-altitude teahouses, usually for an additional charge. At higher elevations, shower facilities become more limited due to the remote location and colder temperatures. Your guide will advise you each day on the availability of hot showers along the route.
The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area is one of Nepal’s richest regions for wildlife and biodiversity. During the trek, you may see blue sheep, Himalayan thar, musk deer, Himalayan monals (Danphe), and a variety of colourful birds. If you’re especially fortunate, you may even spot rare wildlife such as the red panda or the elusive snow leopard, although sightings are never guaranteed.
We recommend packing warm layered clothing, a waterproof jacket and trousers, sturdy trekking boots, a warm hat, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, personal toiletries, and a small first aid kit. A sleeping bag, down jacket, and duffel bag can be provided on loan if required. A detailed packing list will be sent to you after your booking is confirmed.
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for this trek. Your policy should cover high-altitude trekking up to at least 5,500 m, emergency helicopter evacuation, medical treatment, trip cancellation, and personal belongings. Please ensure your insurance policy is valid for trekking in Nepal before your arrival.
Weather and road conditions in the Himalayas can sometimes cause unexpected delays. For this reason, our itinerary includes a reserve/buffer day to provide additional flexibility. If the extra day is needed during the trek, accommodation and full board meals will be provided. If everything runs according to schedule, you can enjoy the additional day relaxing or sightseeing in Kathmandu.
Absolutely. We are happy to tailor the itinerary to match your interests, fitness level, available time, and travel plans. Whether you would like additional acclimatization days, a private trek, upgraded accommodation in Kathmandu, or to combine this trek with other destinations in Nepal, we can create a personalized itinerary to suit your needs.
