Overview

The Nar Phu Valley Trek is a wonderful journey into one of the most remote and culturally rich areas of the Annapurna region. This 14-night / 15-day adventure, from your international arrival in Nepal to your final departure, combines Kathmandu’s ancient culture, scenic mountain drives, peaceful trekking trails, traditional Himalayan villages, and the spectacular high-altitude landscapes of Nar and Phu.

Your adventure begins in Kathmandu, where you will enjoy a guided cultural tour of the city’s important UNESCO World Heritage Sites and prepare for the trek. From Kathmandu, a scenic drive takes you through the Trishuli and Marsyangdi River valleys to Dharapani, the starting point of your trekking journey.

From Dharapani, the trail leads through Koto, Meta, Kyang, and Phu Village, gradually entering the remote and beautiful Nar Phu Valley. The landscape changes from green forests and river valleys to dry, rugged mountain terrain, with dramatic cliffs, deep gorges, ancient trails, and wide open Himalayan landscapes. Along the way, you will experience the peaceful lifestyle, traditional stone houses, Buddhist culture, and warm hospitality of the local communities.

At Phu Village (4,080 m), you have a dedicated acclimatization day to explore the village and visit Tashi Lakhang Monastery. This rest day allows your body to adjust gradually to the increasing altitude before continuing toward the higher parts of the trek.

The journey then continues to Chyako and Nar Village (4,110 m) before reaching the most challenging and rewarding part of the adventure: crossing Kang La Pass (5,306 m / 17,408 ft). From the pass, you can enjoy spectacular views of Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, Pisang Peak, and the Damodar Himal before descending toward Ngawal in the Annapurna region.

After crossing the pass, the trail continues through Pisang and the Marsyangdi Valley to Chame, where the landscape becomes greener and more forested again. From Chame, a scenic drive via Besisahar takes you back to Kathmandu.

A reserve and contingency day is included before your final departure, giving you extra flexibility in case of weather, road, or other unexpected delays. If everything goes according to plan, you can use this day to relax, explore Kathmandu, shop for souvenirs, or simply enjoy some quiet time after your Himalayan adventure.

The Nar Phu Valley Trek is ideal for travelers looking for something more remote, peaceful, cultural, and adventurous than the busy main trekking routes. Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of the Nar Phu Valley Trek as we cross the impressive Kang La Pass (5,306 m / 17,408 ft) and enter the beautiful Manang Valley. We begin early in the morning, when the weather is usually clearer and the mountain views are at their best.

After breakfast, the trail climbs steadily from Nar Village through open and rugged high-altitude landscapes. The ascent becomes increasingly challenging as we approach the pass, so we walk slowly and carefully, taking regular short breaks to rest and enjoy the magnificent surroundings.

Reaching the top of Kang La Pass is a memorable achievement. From the summit, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, Pisang Peak, and the Damodar Himal. Take some time to celebrate this special moment, capture photographs, and enjoy the incredible Himalayan scenery before beginning the descent.

From Kang La Pass, the trail descends through rocky mountain terrain and gradually enters the greener landscapes of the Annapurna Circuit. The descent can be steep in places, so careful footing is important. As you continue toward Ngawal, the scenery changes beautifully from the high alpine landscape to mountain pastures and traditional villages.

Finally, reach Ngawal, a picturesque village situated high above the Manang Valley. After the long and rewarding journey, settle into your Local Teahouse/Lodge, enjoy a warm meal, and take time to rest and celebrate your successful crossing of Kang La Pass.

The peaceful trail provides a pleasant contrast to the challenging crossing of Kang La Pass the previous day.

Continue along the scenic valley toward Chame, the administrative center of Manang District. Chame is a lively mountain settlement with shops, cafés, bakeries, and other useful facilities. You can also enjoy the natural hot springs, a relaxing way to refresh your body after several days of trekking.

We make comfortable stops during the journey for refreshments, lunch, and short breaks. The total driving time may vary depending on road conditions, traffic, weather, and local conditions.

FAQ

1. How difficult is the Nar Phu Valley Trek?

The Nar Phu Valley Trek is graded Moderate to Challenging and requires good physical fitness. The trek includes long walking days, steep and rocky sections, changing altitudes, and the challenging crossing of Kang La Pass (5,306 m / 17,408 ft). Regular walking, hiking, or other physical preparation before the trek is highly recommended.

2. What is the highest altitude reached during the trek?

The highest point of the journey is Kang La Pass at 5,306 m / 17,408 ft. Reaching the pass is one of the main highlights of the trek and offers spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. Proper acclimatization and a slow, steady walking pace are very important at this altitude.

3. What is the best season for the Nar Phu Valley Trek?

The best seasons are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). These months generally offer clearer skies, better mountain views, and more stable trekking conditions. The high pass can still have snow, particularly early in spring, so conditions should always be checked before crossing Kang La.

4. Do I need previous trekking experience?

Previous high-altitude trekking experience is helpful but not essential. You should, however, be comfortable walking for several hours a day on uneven and sometimes steep mountain trails. Good physical preparation, a positive attitude, and following your guide’s advice will make the journey more enjoyable.

5. How many hours do we walk each day?

Most trekking days involve approximately 4–8 hours of walking, depending on the destination, altitude, trail conditions, and pace of the group. Some days are shorter and more relaxed, while the Kang La Pass day is longer and more demanding.

6. Is there an acclimatization day during the trek?

Yes. The itinerary includes a rest and acclimatization day at Phu Village (4,080 m). This gives your body valuable time to adjust to the altitude before continuing toward Nar Village and the higher Kang La Pass. You can also explore the village and visit Tashi Lakhang Monastery during this day.

7. What type of accommodation is available during the trek?

You will stay in the best available Local Teahouse/Lodge throughout the trekking section. Rooms are generally simple and clean, usually with twin beds. Facilities become more basic as you enter the remote Nar Phu Valley, and shared bathrooms are common in higher villages.

8. What food is available during the Nar Phu Valley Trek?

You will receive Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner throughout the trek. Local teahouses usually serve dal bhat, noodles, rice, pasta, potatoes, soups, eggs, vegetables, and other simple trekking meals. Food choices can become more limited in the remote villages, but meals are prepared to provide the energy needed for long mountain days.

9. Is drinking water available along the trail?

Yes. Drinking water can be obtained from teahouses, local sources, and shops where available. We recommend carrying a reusable water bottle and using water purification tablets, drops, or a suitable filtration system to make untreated water safe to drink.

10. Do I need a special permit for the Nar Phu Valley?

Yes. Nar Phu is a restricted trekking area, so a special Nar Phu Valley trekking permit is required. Trekkers also need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). These permits are arranged by the trekking company before entering the restricted area.

11. Can I charge my phone and camera during the trek?

Charging facilities are available at some teahouses, but they can be limited or unavailable in the more remote villages. Charging may also involve an additional fee. We strongly recommend carrying a power bank or portable solar charger, especially if you plan to take many photos and videos.

12. Is mobile phone service and Wi-Fi available?

Communication can be limited and unreliable in the remote Nar Phu Valley. Some villages may have mobile coverage or Wi-Fi, but you should not depend on regular internet access. The limited connectivity also gives you a wonderful opportunity to disconnect from everyday life and enjoy the peaceful Himalayan surroundings.

13. Do I need to carry my own trekking luggage?

No. Porters carry your main trekking luggage, normally with one porter for every two trekkers and a maximum combined load of 20 kg. You will only need to carry a small daypack containing items such as water, snacks, a camera, sunscreen, and extra clothing for the day.

14. What happens if weather or trail conditions affect the itinerary?

The Himalayas are unpredictable, and weather, snowfall, road conditions, trail damage, or other unexpected situations may sometimes affect the planned schedule. A reserve/contingency day is included in the itinerary to provide some flexibility. Your guide and trekking team will always make decisions based on safety and the best available conditions.

15. Is crossing Kang La Pass safe?

Kang La Pass (5,306 m) is challenging because of the high altitude, steep terrain, and possible snow or changing weather. However, with proper acclimatization, an early start, suitable equipment, an experienced guide, and a steady pace, the crossing can be successfully completed under suitable conditions. Your guide will assess the trail and weather before making the final decision to cross.
